Can You Swim Immediately After Pool Replastering?

One of the most common questions we get after completing a pool replaster is — how soon can we swim? The answer is a little more involved than a simple yes or no, but we'll break it down for you.

The Short Answer No — you need to wait at least 7 to 10 days after replastering before swimming. But there's more to it than just waiting.

Why You Have To Wait Fresh plaster needs time to cure properly. Getting into the pool too early can leave footprints and handprints permanently pressed into the surface. It can also affect how the plaster cures which impacts its longevity and appearance.

The Startup Process After replastering your pool goes through what's called a startup process. This involves:

Filling the pool with fresh water immediately after plastering is complete. Brushing the entire pool surface twice a day for the first two weeks — this removes plaster dust and helps the surface cure evenly. Balancing the water chemistry carefully during the first 30 days. Avoiding automatic pool cleaners for the first 30 days.

What Happens If You Skip The Startup? Skipping the startup process is one of the most common reasons new plaster looks bad or fails early. Plaster dust that isn't brushed away can cause discoloration and rough patches. Improper water chemistry in the first month can etch or stain the fresh surface.

When Is It Actually Safe To Swim? Most pools are ready to swim in after 7–10 days if the startup process has been followed correctly and water chemistry is properly balanced. We walk every customer through the full startup process after every job so you know exactly what to do.
